THE Roman Catholic Church in Zimbabwe has been plunged into mourning following the death of Monsignor Matthew Mhishi, a veteran priest who passed away on Monday at age 96.

Monsignor Mhishi died at his residence, Belvedere Presbytery in Harare, on November 2, 2026. His passing coincided with All Souls’ Day, when Catholics around the world remember and pray for the departed faithful.

Father Ephraim Murwira, Secretary to the Archbishop of Harare, announced his death and conveyed the Church’s message of condolence.

Born on September 30, 1930, Monsignor Mhishi witnessed nearly a century of profound change in the country and the Catholic Church, dedicating much of his life to the priesthood.

His passing is a great loss to the Catholic community, especially to fellow clergy and the faithful who shared in his spiritual journey.

In its condolence message, the Church entrusted his soul to the loving mercy of God and offered prayers for comfort and strength to his family, fellow priests, and all those mourning his death.

The coincidence of his passing on All Souls’ Day, a day devoted to remembering the departed, gave his death added spiritual significance.
