Harare, (New Ziana) – Chegutu is set to become a new destination for higher education after an announcement by the government on Wednesday that Greater Heights University would be established in the town, a development expected to widen access to tertiary education and open up potential employment and business opportunities.

The Government’s National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) handle on X said the proposed university would mark a new chapter in the town’s educational and economic development.

“Exciting news for Chegutu! The Municipality of Chegutu has announced that The Greater Heights University is coming to the town,” the NDS2 handle said.

The announcement highlighted the prospect of bringing higher education closer to local communities, expanding opportunities for young people and creating new prospects for businesses and employment as the town prepares for the anticipated institution.

The university’s establishment could help reduce the need for some students to travel to other towns and cities to pursue higher education, potentially easing the financial burden on families while allowing more young people to access tertiary qualifications closer to home.

Beyond education, the development could stimulate economic activity through demand for accommodation, transport, food, retail services and other businesses that typically support university communities.

Construction and subsequent campus operations could also create employment opportunities, although the scale of these benefits will depend on the project’s implementation and the institution’s eventual enrolment and staffing levels.

The NDS2 handle linked the development to Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategy 2 (2026–2030) and Vision 2030, which place emphasis on human capital development, skills training and inclusive economic growth.

“This development aligns with NDS2 (2026–2030) and Vision 2030, where human capital development, skills training and inclusive economic growth are essential to Zimbabwe’s transformation,” the handle said.

However, further details about the proposed institution, including its ownership, construction timeline, location, academic programmes, enrolment capacity and expected opening date, have yet to be provided in the announcement.
